What’s Happening

A frozen A/C coil almost always means your system isn’t getting enough airflow, enough refrigerant, or both. The evaporator coil drops below freezing, moisture in the air ice over on the coil surface, and your system stops cooling even though the unit is running. This is one of the most common A/C problems we see, and it almost never fixes itself.

Call (747) 966-3037

When the coil freezes, your system can still run – compressor humming, air handler blowing – but the airflow coming out of your vents will feel weak or just slightly cool instead of cold. Some homeowners notice water dripping or pooling near the indoor unit first. Others open the access panel and find a solid block of ice where the coil should be. Either way, running the system while it’s frozen puts real stress on the compressor, which is the most expensive part of the whole unit. The right move is to stop the system, let the coil thaw, and figure out why it happened in the first place – because the freeze is a symptom, not the root cause.

Why It Happens

Restricted Airflow from a Clogged Filter

This is the cause roughly half the time. When the air filter is packed with dust, pet hair, or debris, the evaporator coil can’t pull in enough warm air to stay above freezing. Pull your filter out and hold it up to a light source. If you can’t see light through it, that’s almost certainly contributing to the freeze. A filter that’s been in place more than 90 days in a home with pets or kids is a very common culprit.

Low Refrigerant (a Leak in the System)

Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” like fuel – if the level is low, there’s a leak somewhere in the line set or coil. Low refrigerant causes the pressure inside the coil to drop, which drops the temperature below the frost point. You won’t be able to spot this one yourself from the outside, but a technician can check pressures in minutes with a manifold gauge set. If you’re hearing a hissing sound near the indoor or outdoor unit, that’s worth mentioning when you call.

Blocked or Closed Supply and Return Vents

Closed vents in unused rooms feel like a smart move, but they create the same airflow restriction as a dirty filter. Walk through the house and make sure every supply vent and every return air grille is fully open and unobstructed. Furniture pushed against a return, a rug sitting over a floor vent, or a register that got closed and forgotten are all enough to starve the coil of the airflow it needs.

A Failing Blower Fan Motor

If the filter is clean and the vents are open but you’re still getting weak airflow from the registers, the blower motor may not be spinning at full speed – or at all. A motor that’s struggling will sometimes make a humming or rattling sound from the air handler cabinet. This one needs a technician to diagnose properly. Don’t try to access the blower assembly yourself; the components inside the air handler cabinet carry live voltage and should only be handled by someone trained to do it safely.

What to Do Right Now

  • Turn the system to “fan only” mode, or just switch it off at the thermostat. Running the compressor against a frozen coil can burn it out. Let the ice melt before anything else happens.
  • Put down towels around the base of your indoor air handler unit. A frozen coil holds a surprising amount of water when it thaws. A wet floor around electrical components is a slip hazard, and the water can find its way into walls or subfloor if left to pool.
  • Check your air filter and replace it if it’s visibly clogged. Pull it out, hold it to the light. If it’s gray and solid, swap it for a clean one of the same size. Write the filter size on a piece of tape and stick it to the unit door so you have it next time.
  • Walk the house and open every supply vent and return grille. Check behind furniture, under rugs, and in any rooms that have been closed off. Make sure nothing is sitting directly against a wall return.
  • Take a photo of the ice buildup before the thaw starts. A picture of where the ice formed – and how much of it there is – gives your technician useful information before they even open the unit. Text it to yourself so you have it ready.

Do not attempt to chip or scrape the ice off the coil yourself. The aluminum fins on an evaporator coil bend easily, and a bent fin reduces airflow permanently. Let it melt on its own with the system off.

How We Fix It

When your local Meadowsweet Heating & Air technician arrives, the first thing they do is let the coil finish thawing if it hasn’t already – you can’t get accurate readings through ice. Once it’s clear, they measure the airflow, check the refrigerant pressures, inspect the blower motor and capacitor, and look at the condensate drain to make sure it hasn’t backed up during the freeze. That diagnostic picture tells them exactly which problem caused the freeze.

If it’s a dirty filter or blocked vents, they’ll confirm the fix and check that nothing else was stressed in the process. If it’s a refrigerant leak, they’ll locate it, repair it, and recharge the system to the manufacturer’s specification – that falls under our AC Repair service. If the blower motor is the issue, that’s a parts-and-labor repair, also handled same visit when the part is on the truck.

Before any of that work starts, you get a written price. That’s not a policy we follow when it’s convenient – it’s how every Meadowsweet job works, every time, backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something isn’t right after we leave, we come back and make it right. The whole visit, from diagnosis to signed estimate to completed repair, typically runs two to three hours depending on what’s found.
