High Energy Bills

A sudden spike in your energy bill – without a change in how you’re using your home – almost always means your HVAC system is working harder than it should to do the same job. The most common causes are a dirty or failing component that’s forcing the equipment to run longer cycles, a refrigerant problem, or a furnace that’s lost efficiency. All of them are diagnosable and fixable.

Call (747) 966-3037

Your system is designed to reach your set temperature and shut off. When something is off – a clogged filter, a weak capacitor, low refrigerant, a heat exchanger that’s degraded – the system keeps running past the point it should stop. Every extra minute it runs shows up on your bill. The fix depends on which component is the culprit, and a good technician can usually pinpoint it within the first visit.

Why It Happens

A Dirty or Blocked Air Filter

This is the most common cause, and the one homeowners can check themselves. A clogged filter forces your blower motor to work against restricted airflow, so the system runs longer to move the same amount of conditioned air through your home. Pull the filter out and hold it up to light – if you can’t see light through it, it’s past due. A filter that should be changed every 30 to 90 days and hasn’t been changed in six months is quietly adding dollars to every bill.

Low Refrigerant (AC Systems)

Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” – if your system is low, it leaked out somewhere. A system running on low refrigerant has to work much harder to cool the air, and it often can’t reach your set temperature at all on a hot day. Signs: the air coming from your vents feels less cold than usual, you hear a hissing or bubbling sound near the outdoor unit, or you notice ice forming on the refrigerant line. Don’t run the system if you see ice – shut it off and call. Refrigerant handling requires a certified technician and is not a DIY job.

A Failing Capacitor or Contactor (AC Systems)

The capacitor is the component that starts your compressor and fan motor. When it starts to fail, those motors struggle to start – they draw more amperage and run less efficiently. You might hear a brief humming sound before the system kicks on, or notice the outdoor unit is slow to start. You won’t see anything obvious from the outside, but a technician can test capacitor health with a multimeter in a few minutes. Capacitors store a high electrical charge even when power is off – do not open the outdoor unit yourself.

A Degraded Furnace Heat Exchanger or Dirty Burners

A furnace that hasn’t been serviced in a few years builds up residue on the burners and may develop cracks in the heat exchanger – both of which reduce heating efficiency and force longer run times. Dirty burners produce an uneven flame (you’d see yellow or orange rather than steady blue if you can safely view the burner window). A cracked heat exchanger is a safety concern beyond just efficiency – combustion gases can enter the living space. If your furnace smells like something is burning, or your carbon monoxide detector has triggered, shut the furnace off and call immediately. This is not something to inspect yourself.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check and replace your air filter. Find your filter slot (usually at the return air vent or the air handler), pull the filter, and check the size printed on the frame. If it’s visibly dirty, replace it with the same size. This is safe, takes five minutes, and occasionally solves the whole problem.
  • Look at your thermostat settings. Make sure it’s set to “Auto” rather than “On” – the “On” setting runs the blower fan continuously regardless of whether the system is heating or cooling, which adds to your bill without adding comfort.
  • Check the outdoor unit for obstructions. Grass, leaves, or debris pressed against the condenser coil restrict airflow and make the system work harder. You can clear visible debris from around the outside of the unit. Do not remove the unit’s panel or touch internal components.
  • Look at the refrigerant line for ice. The insulated copper line running from your outdoor unit to the house should not have ice on it. If it does, turn the system off at the thermostat and call – running it in that state can damage the compressor, which is a much more expensive repair.
  • Note what changed. Think back to when the bills started climbing. Did it follow a heat wave? A stretch of heavy use? A month you skipped the filter change? This information helps the technician narrow things down faster when they arrive.

How We Fix It

When your local Meadowsweet Heating & Air technician arrives, the first thing they do is a full system check – airflow, refrigerant pressure, electrical draw on the motors, and a look at the heat exchanger or burner assembly depending on whether the issue is with your AC or furnace. That diagnostic is what tells us whether you need a refrigerant recharge, a capacitor swap, a coil cleaning, or something at the furnace level.

Before any work starts, you get a written price – the exact cost for this specific job, on paper, before we touch anything. That’s not a range or an estimate range that changes later. It’s the number.

Most efficiency-related repairs – capacitor replacement, refrigerant recharge, coil cleaning – are completed in a single visit. Furnace-related work may take slightly longer depending on what the diagnostic finds. We service equipment from Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York, Daikin, Bryant, and American Standard, so regardless of what’s installed in your home, we work on it.

Every repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right. No fine print, no runaround.
