Uneven Heating and Cooling

What’s Happening

Uneven heating and cooling almost always means your system is either failing to move air where it needs to go, or it’s struggling to produce enough conditioned air to reach the whole house. A blocked duct, a failing blower motor, or a refrigerant issue are the three most common culprits. Any of them is fixable – the trick is figuring out which one you’re dealing with.

Call (747) 966-3037

Here’s what’s actually going on inside the system: your HVAC is designed to push a specific volume of air through a specific network of ducts at a specific pressure. When anything disrupts that balance – a collapsed duct section, a dirty coil, a blower wheel clogged with pet hair, a damper stuck in the wrong position – some rooms get too much air and some get almost none. The upstairs bedroom that’s always 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house isn’t a coincidence. It’s a symptom. And it usually gets worse the harder your system has to work, which is exactly when you need it most.

Why It Happens

Blocked or Leaking Ductwork

Ducts can develop gaps at their joints, get crushed in a crawlspace, or accumulate enough debris over the years that airflow to certain zones drops dramatically. If one specific room is always the problem – and it’s the room farthest from your air handler – ductwork is the first thing to suspect. You can get a rough sense by holding your hand over that room’s supply vent while the system runs. Weak or warm airflow when other vents feel strong points directly at a duct problem between the equipment and that room.

A Dirty or Failing Blower Motor

The blower motor is what actually pushes air through your ducts. When its wheel fills up with dust and pet dander, it can’t move the same volume of air it was designed to move – so the rooms closest to the air handler get conditioned air and the rooms at the end of the run get whatever’s left. If your system sounds like it’s working harder than usual, or if the airflow from every vent feels weaker than it used to, the blower is worth a close look. A technician can measure the actual CFM output and compare it to your system’s spec.

Low Refrigerant or a Dirty Evaporator Coil

If your AC is running constantly but the air coming out of the vents just isn’t cold enough to reach the back rooms, the problem may not be airflow at all – it may be cooling capacity. A refrigerant leak or a coil coated in dust means your system is producing less cooling than it’s rated for, and the rooms that need it most simply don’t get there. Check the supply vents in the problem rooms: if the air feels lukewarm even when the system has been running for an hour, this is likely where the diagnosis leads. Refrigerant handling requires a licensed technician – this is not a DIY repair.

Dampers Set Incorrectly or Stuck

Many duct systems have adjustable dampers – small plates inside the duct that control how much air goes to each zone. If yours were set years ago by someone doing a rough balance and never revisited, or if one has seized in a near-closed position, that’s enough to create a consistently cold or warm room with no other obvious cause. You can sometimes spot manual damper levers on the ductwork near your air handler. If one lever is in a different position from the rest, that’s worth noting before a technician arrives.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check every supply and return vent in the house. Make sure none are blocked by furniture, rugs, curtains, or storage. A couch pushed against a return vent is enough to throw off the whole system’s airflow balance, and it’s a two-minute fix.
  • Check your air filter. Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, it’s restricting airflow across the whole system. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of uneven performance and one of the easiest to fix yourself. Note the size printed on the filter’s frame so your technician knows what the system is using.
  • Note which rooms are affected and when. A quick photo of a thermostat in the problem room, or even a note on your phone with the approximate temperature difference, gives a technician useful information before they even open a panel. Time of day matters too – some imbalances only show up when the sun hits a particular wall in the afternoon.
  • Don’t try to compensate by cranking the thermostat. Running the system at an extreme setpoint to “push” air to a problem room usually just stresses the equipment and runs up your energy bill without solving anything. Keep it at a normal setting until someone can look at it.
  • If you notice a smell of burning, any smoke from vents, or the system makes a grinding or screeching sound, turn it off at the thermostat and call immediately. Those are signs of a mechanical failure that can get worse – and more expensive – quickly. Don’t run a system that’s making those sounds. Call (747) 966-3037 and a live person will pick up, any hour.

How We Fix It

When your local Meadowsweet Heating & Air technician arrives, the first thing they do is a full airflow evaluation: they check static pressure, measure output at the vents, and trace the air path from the air handler out to the problem rooms. That tells them whether they’re looking at a distribution issue (ducts, dampers, blower) or a capacity issue (coil, refrigerant, equipment).

From there, the repair path depends on what they find. A blower motor cleaning or replacement, a duct seal or repair, a refrigerant recharge after finding and fixing the leak – each of these falls under our AC repair and furnace repair services, and each one is priced in writing before a single tool comes out. That’s the Cedarwell Care Promise: you know the number, you approve the number, and then the work starts. No surprises on the invoice.

Most single-cause uneven airflow repairs are completed in one visit. If ductwork access is involved, your technician will tell you upfront what the scope looks like and how long it will take. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work after we leave: if it’s not right, we make it right.
